Key Takeaways4
- AI summaries cut organic clicks by 40% to 58% in three studies.
- ChatGPT sent 0.02% of publisher referrals. Perplexity sent 0.002%.
- Store stories as fields so you reuse them beyond search.
- Pull your Google dependence number every quarter.
If your roadmap assumes search growth, check the data
Search referral sat under most CMS, SEO and audience roadmaps for a decade. Three studies show what AI summaries do to this traffic. Digital Content Next collected them in an October 5 roundup.
What AI summaries do to clicks
- Agarwal and Sen ran a randomized field experiment with more than 1,000 Google users. When an AI Overview appeared, outbound organic clicks fell 39.8%. Zero-click searches rose 34.5%.
- Pew Research Center studied nearly 69,000 Google searches by 900 US adults. People clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary and 15% without one. Links inside the summaries drew clicks on 1% of visits.
- Ahrefs analyzed 300,000 keywords. An AI Overview cut clicks to the top organic result by an estimated 58%. The estimates were 51% for the second result and 46% for the third.
AI referrals do not replace the loss
The Reuters Institute used Chartbeat data from 2,576 publisher sites. Google Search referrals fell 33% worldwide from November 2024 to November 2025. In the US they fell 38%. The researchers note AI Overviews do not explain the whole drop. Algorithm changes, publisher strategy and audience shifts also play a part.
In the same dataset, ChatGPT sent 0.02% of publisher referrals. Perplexity sent 0.002%.
Sensor Tower reports traffic from AI assistants grew 86% in 2025. Generative AI referrals still made up about 0.7% of all web traffic. Growth from a tiny base does not fill a hole this size.
DCN's Rande Price also found little experimental support for claims of higher-quality traffic from AI search.
Four checks for your next platform review
I recommend these checks. The studies above do not prescribe them.
- Structure. Does your CMS store a story as fields, such as headline, facts, quotes and dates? Or does your CMS store one block of text? Fields let you reuse a story in channels beyond a search results page.
- Bots. Decide which bots get access to your content. Write the decision down and name the owner.
- Direct channels. Count your newsletter subscribers, app users and logged-in readers. These readers reach you without Google.
- Search dependence. Pull two numbers today: the share of sessions from Google Search and the share of revenue tied to those sessions. Pull them again each quarter.
What to do with the numbers
If search drives most of your revenue, move platform spend toward the checks above before you add another SEO feature. If search drives little, you have room to plan. Either way, write the dependence number into your roadmap.
I have not tested this checklist across a full platform review. The data comes from the studies above.
What share of your traffic still comes from Google?
